History of Dhaka Taxes Bar Association

History of Dhaka Taxes Bar Association

The Dhaka Taxes Bar Association (DTBA) is one of the longstanding professional organizations of tax practitioners in Bangladesh. The Association was established in 1950 with the objective of bringing together professionals engaged in taxation and related legal and professional activities and of creating a common platform for protecting their professional interests.

Since its establishment, the Association has played an important role in the development of the tax profession in Bangladesh. Over the years, it has represented the interests of tax practitioners, promoted professional discipline and ethical standards, and contributed to discussions concerning taxation laws, rules, policies, and administration.

The Association is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. Its constitution defines the Association's objectives, membership, organizational structure, professional responsibilities, welfare activities, and various services for its members. The available constitutional record notes amendments made up to 12 December 2004.

An important aspect of the Association's history has been its emphasis on the welfare and professional development of its members. Over time, the Association established various initiatives and funds, including a Benevolent Fund and Welfare Fund, to provide assistance to members and their families during times of financial hardship, illness, disability, or other difficulties. The Welfare Fund rules were adopted in a special general meeting held on 31 August 1987, while the Benevolent Fund was constituted earlier, in a general meeting held on 11 September 1976.

The Association has also maintained a continuing relationship with the country's tax administration. Its members have participated in discussions with the National Board of Revenue (NBR) on matters relating to tax collection, taxpayer compliance, tax advisory services, and the development of the taxation system. For example, a 2006 meeting between the NBR and the Dhaka Taxes Bar Association addressed expanding the taxpayer base and strengthening tax compliance.

Today, the Dhaka Taxes Bar Association continues its long-standing tradition of serving the tax profession and its members. With a large community of tax professionals, the Association remains an important professional platform contributing to revenue collection, tax compliance, professional development, and the advancement of taxation-related practice in Bangladesh.

A Legacy of Professional Service

From its establishment in 1950 to the present day, the Dhaka Taxes Bar Association has evolved alongside Bangladesh's taxation system. Its history reflects a continuing commitment to professional unity, welfare, knowledge, ethical practice, and constructive engagement in the development of the country's tax administration.

The Association looks forward to carrying this legacy forward by embracing modern technology, strengthening professional education, supporting its members, and contributing to a more transparent, efficient, and taxpayer-friendly taxation system in Bangladesh.
